Carrie Mae Weems “parades through the world,” looking at people and things very close. Frame a part of your body. Zoom in and notice the details of how that body part looks and moves. Create small movements with that body part that tells your story.

Carrie Mae Weems’ work often explores cultural identity. Write the story of your personal culture- where are you from and what are the cultures that make you you?

As much as I like to think of myself as a simple person, there is a lot more to me and my personal cultures than I originally thought.

I wake earlier than needed on days off, and always drink water as I water the plants. We hydrate together. Taking moments to watch clouds is very important. It is also important to listen to the sounds of the wind and birds. Appreciate the warmth of the sun kissing my skin. I keep my favorite colors near me everywhere possible. Cute is religion. Cleaning is a healing ritual. My personal culture consists of many things to keep myself comforted and relaxed like the true nature of a lion. Time spent with friends and loved ones is crucial and sometimes limited, but time is always made during the holidays. Every victory and joy is celebrated no matter how small.

Lynn Nottage’s plays often take an honest look at cultures we don’t often see onstage. Write a one-page play about a group of people (perhaps you know them) whose stories you want to see onstage.

Scene 1

A chilly December morning. KIKO dusts off her sleek black dress and ties a large red ribbon around her bobbed dark brown hair. Simple brown flats complete her uniform. JIJI, a rather small black cat rests at the foot of the creaky old bed. He stretches and yawns, before walking over to KIKOs witches broom.

KIKO

That's not needed for today, Jiji. I won't be making deliveries. We’re tending the bakery this morning !

JIJI

That means we can eat as much bread as we’d like !

KIKO stares at the tall mirror in front of her. She outlined the waist of her dress with her hands, then patted her round cheeks which quickly flushed red. She observes her reflection closely, visibly embarrassed.

KIKO

Absolutely not ! I won't have any bread today !

JIJI

Not even your favorite fresh cinnamon rolls ?

KIKO scowls and starts down the stairs. JIJI quickly follows behind her.

KIKO

Let’s hurry before customers arrive !

While setting up the shop, the doorbell rings signaling the first patron of the day. KIKO welcomes her, but gasps when she turns to see who has entered. A girl she has long admired.

KIKO

The princess !! What brings you here ?

KIKO watches as PRINCESS SOPHIEs slender fingers loosens her scarf and her golden blonde hair falls around her face and shoulders. Her gleamed a bright soft lavender color. Once again this morning, KIKO feels embarrassed at her own appearance. She has always wanted to look like her idol.

PRINCESS SOPHIE

I came to see the bakery that everyone in the castle talks about for myself. I didn’t think the owner would be so young !

KIKO

Well, I’m not the owner and I think we’re about the same age..

PRINCESS SOPHIE

My apologies. (She steps forward towards the dessert display with a sly smile.) I couldn’t help but think you’re much too beautiful to be similar in age as me.

JIJI looks up from his sunbathing window seat towards the two, surprised. KIKO is taken aback, flustered, clutching the clipboard in her hands to her chest. SOPHIE looks up and smiles at KIKO, holding a fruit tart cake in her hands.
