Armory Art Together
Summer ‘21
With thousands of original art pieces created by Youth Corps interns during the first four iterations of the program, Armory Art Together continued this summer. The young artists were inspired by Armory artists with four weeks of prompts alongside two live, interactive virtual Open Studios.
Using the digital video series Armory Artist Retrospective created by Armory Teaching Artists, students learned about Martin Creed, Theaster Gates, Lynn Nottage, and Taylor Mac. Students had their choice of artistic medium with prompts inspired by the themes and work of these four Armory artists. Students were also sent an Art Pack (including a stamp-making kit!) to inspire their work.
As a way to make sure that a live community of artmaking was available for any interested students, Education Special Projects Coordinator Sharlyn Galarza hosted an optional drop-in Open Studio on Zoom. One for the first week called the Kick Off, and another during the last week called the Cook Out. These two sessions combined fun summer energy with live artmaking in community, inspired by Armory artists Martin Creed and Taylor Mac. This allowed the students to stay connected with Education team members and each other while creating visual artwork together.
Fifty-five students participated and have submitted over 230 pieces of art—many creating visual art pieces and musical compositions. Art will be showcased on the Armory Art Together section of armoryyouthcorps.com, as a time capsule representing art created by the Youth Corps community during these transformational times.
