Lynn Nottage looks to the past in order to inspire her works. With that in mind, think of your favorite summer memory. What was happening? What sounds did you hear? What flavors did you taste?

American Playwright, Lynn Nottage, looks to her past to inspire her work. I do this quite often as I am taking pictures and creating treatments for video ideas that I have in mind. One of my favorite summer memories is going to El Viejo Yayo restaurant in Brooklyn, for some delicious Latin American food (I still go there to this day, the food is amazing!). As I sat down within this restaurant I would hear smooth jazz music playing accompanied by the soft talking of other parties that were also in attendance that day. In addition, I would also hear the clinking and sounds of cups and plates constantly being moved in and out of the kitchen. As I ate, I tasted the varying seasonings that were used to create the wonderful dishes that this restaurant provides.

What is a message that you would give the future you? What’s a piece of advice? Or maybe an idea you have that will better serve you in the future? What is something that you can give your future self?

A message that I would give to my future self would be to always take it one day at a time/focus on only the present. We as human-beings often worry about the future and contemplate all of the decisions we’ve previously made. This takes away from dealing with what is currently in front of us and acknowledging what we can do differently now/in the moment. Something I would give to my future self is the trait of observing more. I believe that we can learn a lot through silently observing our surroundings.

What is your favorite place to go to in your neighborhood? What makes it your favorite? What does it look like? If you could show someone your favorite place, who would it be?

My favorite place to go to within my neighborhood is always the park that’s not too far away. The aspect that makes it my favorite is that I am able to walk around and find a place to quietly be with my own thoughts. Although it is great to be around my friends and family, sometimes we all need to take a break and be alone with nothing but nature and our thoughts in order to fully be in a calm state. If I could show someone my favorite place it would definitely be one of my younger siblings, they would certainly appreciate this park that I often visit.
