Protect your energy (2023) - Janneurys Colon

“I took a different type of approach when taking about liberty that probably most won’t, but the first thing when hearing about liberation, was freedom and slavery. And I instantly thought of how much phones have us as humanity trapped and enslaved by spending so many hour of our days on it. Wasting our energy and time. We are Glued to our phones”

My Mind’s Eye (2023) - Taylor Maheia

“Liberation to me is seeing Black people live freely without discrimination. We are the foundation of literally everything and yet we are barely supported and recognized. One day I see us finally getting the credit we deserve.”

Healing (2023) - Emily Perez-Garcia

“When thinking about what liberation meant, I considered when I felt personally liberated from something. For me, I realized that when I did my inner work and healing, I was freed from toxic or unhelpful thoughts. For me liberation can take place in the physical and mental world.”

“The canvas size, coloring, and placement of the square here are all really intentional. 2009 by 2009 is the size I selected for this piece as that was the year President Obama was sworn in and hailed as a year that white supremacy was ended. We all know that to be untrue. The approximate ratio I was aiming was 1/20 on the black to white which represents 5% ratio of the number of police that get charged with manslaughter/murder and go free compared to those of whom the charges that actually rest with. The placement represents hope for the black community. This is a piece that I both would one day love to revise but I think stands as a fairly easy to digest representation of what may lead some toward radicalization and liberation.”

Yellow Brick Road (2023) - Kedesia Robinson

“I was inspired by several things that I incorporated in my collage. Some of those being women idols I look up to, African pride, nature. I also thought it would be great to include the yellow brick road because I believe it represents someone going through a journey to get to liberation. I believe that all of these concepts encourage freedom.”

We create the future they didn’t get to see. (2023) - Cristina Hernandez

“This piece is so special to me although heartbreaking how many of our Black siblings have been taken from us. But here in the south side of Williamsburg they live on thru the incredible youth and teachers and I feel so incredibly proud and grateful to be a part of organizations that prioritize Black lives, that teach Black lives and love Black lives. We are creating the future they didn’t get to see.”
