Monologue from Funnyhouse of a Negro by Adrienne Kennedy - Read by Adonai Fletcher-Jones
“Background: Sarah recounts her experiences and feelings as a mixed woman because of the society she lives in, she starts the play with a resentment of her Blackness.
I wanted to tackle this because I thought the monologue was telling of the character’s mental state towards herself and I wanted to convey that shy, internalized self-hatred.”
Untitled - Blue Price
Young, Wild, Free - Taylor Maheia
“I love being in nature and I think that defines liberation. Being able to be amongst the trees and flow like the nature around you.”
Her Child - Kedesia Robinson
“This was my second time performing this piece, and I felt more relaxed and confident this time than the first. This piece is one of the most vulnerable out of many of my work. I, last-minute, decided to perform this piece because I was inspired by someone who did not feel confident in sharing their story. After finishing this piece, I felt so free that I worried less about any errors that I might have made. I hope that this piece can inspire and lift others who have troubled pasts and have more confidence in their story.”
