Lynn Nottage’s plays often take an honest look at cultures we don’t often see onstage. Write a one-page play about a group of people (perhaps you know them) whose stories you want to see onstage.

Scene 1

Time: 1:47 a.m.

Setting: Abandoned alley, in the city, a group of girls develop a plan.

Emma: I knew we should’ve picked a local restaurant, now look in the mess we’re in! We could die!

Amir: Stop being such a pessimist! We wanted to go to the city and dress up. We deserved it, we've had a long week. Too much routine is exhausting.

Kate: Exactly, we all agreed to this tonight. It isn’t our fault this happened.

Emma: Doesn’t matter, we are still in this mess. It’s not even our mess.

Amir: What did you just say?

Emma: It isn’t our mess.

Kate: Well would you leave if you had the chance?

Emma: No…I wouldn’t. This isn’t our mess, but it shouldn’t be her mess either.

Kate: I’m tired of seeing us on the news going missing, being harassed, or being brutally beaten by men who have no respect and who don’t understand the concept of damn boundaries!
Britt: We need to come up with a plan fast, this girl can be in serious trouble.

Amir: Right. Well, we’re in this alley where we can grab sticks and bottled glasses.

Kate: Good idea.

The girls search for potential weapons.

Emma: Guys I’m scared.

Amir: There’s no time for that, we need to focus.

Britt: Okay, take off your heels. If anything goes south we have to run. Use the heels to gouge out some eyes if need be.

Amir: Okay we have a few glass bottles and this metal thing…I’m not sure what this is, but it will leave serious damage.

Britt: Perfect. Amir and I will attack the drunk douchebags. Kate will get the car ready and call the police while Emma aids the girl. Everyone clear on the plan?

The girls nod.

Britt: Don’t hesitate. We need to act fast. Move out.
