Carrie Mae Weems “parades through the world,” looking at people and things very close. Frame a part of your body. Zoom in and notice the details of how that body part looks and moves. Create small movements with that body part that tells your story.

Carrie Mae Weems’ work often explores cultural identity. Write the story of your personal culture- where are you from and what are the cultures that make you you?

I’m from New York, the city that never sleeps with so many different people running around in it. I grew up in a mostly bock neighborhood, yet as time went on more gentrification had changed the neighborhood. Growing up in black neighborhood has helped me appreciate black art, music, hair, and style and grew me into the man that I am today. People with my skin tone tend to get misjudged time and time again but our culture is alive in almost every form of mainstream media. There is nothing more beautiful than my culture I believe and I’m happy to be able to live in a time where it is not only more alive than ever but appreciated by many.
