Armory Art Together
Fall ‘20
Building on the success of the previous two editions of Armory Art Together, this third iteration of the program continues to offer artmaking opportunities, community connection, and an asynchronous option for nearly sixty Youth Corps of all generations to create art.
This semester, Youth Corps will explore the art of four Armory artists, inspired by one of the videos created by Armory Teaching Artists and shared with Partner Schools. The series begins with a look at Bill T. Jones and Afterwardness, and continues with explorations of the work of Nick Cave, who brought the colorful town hall/dance hall event The Let Go to the Armory in June 2018; textile artist Ann Hamilton, whose Event of a Thread saw the Drill Hall full of swings and pigeons in December 2012; and William Kentridge, whose epic multidisciplinary performance about African porters in WWI, The Head & the Load, was seen at the Armory in December 2018.
Participants create art in response to one of the Teaching Artists’ prompts in the videos and/or to a newly created prompt linking the Drill Hall piece to life right now. And although the program is intentionally designed to be mainly asynchronous (allowing students will intermittent internet access or challenging schedules to participate), the program will still include four optional Open Studios, led by Education Special Projects Coordinator Shar Galarza. At these workshops, students explore and respond to the art together, creating something new in collaboration based on what they learned from the art and the artist, in a process that nearly mimics an in-person Armory education program as Zoom allows.
